Owning a cat

The City of Karratha is a pet-friendly City, and you may choose to own and care for a cat in your home. The City encourages responsible pet ownership.

The Cat Act 2011 requires all cats over the age of six months to be sterilised, microchipped and registered with their relevant local government, with renewals due by 31 October each year. Visit the cat registration page for more information.

Cat ownership in our City is guided by the City of Karratha Animals, Environment and Nuisance Local Law 2011 and the Cat Act 2011.

The City’s local law allows each household to keep a maximum of three cats. For their safety, and for the safety of our local wildlife, owners basic responsibilities require you to:

  • Contain your cat on your own property at all times
  • Ensure your cat is easily identifiable with a collar, name tag with owner phone number and a registration tag
  • Microchip and sterilise your cat

If there is a health reason preventing your cat from being sterilised or microchipped, please provide documentation from your vet along with your cat's registration.
