Camping fees and rules

Camping is a popular pastime in the City of Karratha, and an excellent way to experience the uniqueness of the region. You can camp anytime throughout the year, with peak camping season running from 1 May to 30 September each year.  

Camping fees

Fees apply during peak camping season. Camping fees are subject to change and are based on a per night rate. Campers may stay a maximum of 28 days within any three-month period. Campers may spend 28 nights at Cleaverville and then move to 40-Mile Point for 28 nights as these are considered separate camping grounds.

After this time (56 nights), you will need to move to another approved camping ground or caravan park within the region.

Off season runs from 1 October to 30 April each year. No fees apply during the off season. Campers may stay a maximum of three nights per 28 days. 

Camping permits 

Cleaverville nature-based camping and 40-Mile Point (Gnoorea Point) permits can be booked online.  

Fees for these sites are $16 for one night or $92 for seven nights, paid in advance. The easiest way to arrange your stay is to book and pay <online>. 

The City of Karratha Fees and Charges sets out current fees, which may change at any time.

Conditions of camping  

The Caravan Parks and Camping Grounds Act 1995 covers the conditions of camping which must be followed, including:  

Caretakers, Rangers and Police are Authorised Officers; their lawful direction must be followed.  

  • No potable water available on site.  
  • Each campsite must have a chemical toilet; on-site toilets are for day users only.  
  • Sullage disposal points are available.  
  • During Camping Season, check in with the caretaker to be directed to a suitable site.  
  • Camp only within the existing camp sites.  
  • Maintain a 3-metre clearance between sites. 
  • Site must be left tidy and clear on departure.  
  • Bins are for household rubbish only; rubbish must be placed in the bins or removed.  
  • Wrap and bin fish offal; do not discard in the water or around the beach and camp areas.  
  • Bring your own firewood for cooking fires; no existing foliage may be damaged.   
  • No open fires of any type on very high, extreme or catastrophic fire danger days. 
  • Antisocial behaviour is not tolerated. 
  • Dogs are permitted under provisions of the Dog Act 1976. 
  • Be courteous with the use of generators; switch off between 10pm and 6am. 
  • Drive only on existing tracks - watch for wildlife, vehicles and pedestrians.  

Illegal camping 

It is an offence to camp anywhere other than in a registered caravan park or designated camping ground/nature-based camping area. If you do so you may receive an on-the-spot $100 fine. The camping information fact sheet below, offers more information on where you can camp safely.

Rest stops 

There are three 24-hour rest stops conveniently located near Karratha; Robe River rest stop and Miaree Pool, both between Onslow and Karratha, and West Peawah rest stop between Karratha and Port Hedland. For information on rest stops and road closures, visit www.mainroads.wa.gov.au

Grey waste dump point location are available throughout Karratha, the Pilbara and surrounds.
