Floods

It’s important to prepare your property for the possibility of flooding, and stay up-to-date with the latest and most accurate flood information in an emergency.

As floods are unpredictable and destructive, if you live in a flood prone region you need to prepare for the possibility of a flood endangering you, impacting your property, or isolating you from the community and essential services.

You can prepare for flooding ahead of time by:

  • Understanding the flood risk to your area, see if your property is in a flood prone zone - view the Storm Surge Risk Policy
  • Preparing your home and property - if your area is flood prone consider flooring alternatives to carpets
  • Asking the City about evacuation routes and centres
  • Preparing an emergency kit and a household flood plan
  • Preparing an emergency plan for your pets
  • Keeping a list of emergency telephone numbers handy (e.g. on the fridge or by the phone)
  • Checking your insurance policy to see if you are covered for flood damage.

Sandbags or similar products can be purchased from many hardware or garden supply stores. During times of imminent deluge, hessian bags can be collected from your local State Emergency Services (SES).

Travelling in areas under flood
The majority of flood-related deaths in Australia result from inexperienced people entering flood waters on foot, in vehicles and by boat.

Driving on flooded roads is extremely dangerous. Roads may be damaged and bridges destroyed.

It is important to review your travel plans if the region you are travelling through has experienced recent flooding.
