City taking action to mitigate mosquito numbers

The City  is aware of the current spike in mosquito numbers in town following a number of reports.

Our officers have identified the source of the issue as evaporation ponds behind Baynton and are working towards a solution with the responsible body.

Unfortunately, there is no quick-fix, and the situation might persist for another couple of weeks.

Our Environmental Health Officers are looking into solutions and will consider fogging if the weather permits as well as taking other actions to mitigate mosquito numbers.

In the meantime, here are some ways to fight the bite:

  • Covering up in long, loose-fitting clothing,
  • Applying a personal repellent containing DEET or picaridin,
  • Removing sources of stagnant water (a favourite breeding ground for mozzies) from around your property.
  • Clear all overgrown vegetation on your property to reduce harbourage for mosquitos

If you have any concerns or questions, please contact the City’s Environmental Health team on 9186 8555
