Kids Swim Free In January

Karratha Councillors endorsed the initiative at the December Ordinary Council Meeting to help provide relief to children during the hottest part of summer.

As part of the move, the City will waive entrance fees for people under 18 years of age for swimming pool facilities at the Karratha Leisureplex, Wickham Recreation Precinct and Roebourne Aquatic Centre during January.

Casual Shoot Around at the KLP also had its fees waived, and kids can shoot hoops for free on the airconditioned indoor courts.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said the Casual Shoot Around at the Karratha Leisureplex was a popular activity for young people.

Mayor Long said this move would encourage kids and teens to cool off over the hottest part of the year.

“This is a positive initiative that will help children stay engaged in recreational activities over summer,” Cr Long said.

“We know this is the hottest time of the year and traditionally young people stay indoors.”

Cr Long said it was hoped this would ease the financial burden on families.

“It is expected to save families around the City of Karratha about $18,000 in fees,” Cr Long said.
