Karratha Councillors have approved a three-year extension to an initiative to keep children active during the hottest part of summer.
As part of the move, the City of Karratha will waive entrance fees for people under 18 years of age for swimming pool facilities at the Karratha Leisureplex, Wickham Recreation Precinct and Roebourne Aquatic Centre during January.
Casual Shoot Around at the KLP also had its fees waived, and kids can shoot hoops for free on the airconditioned indoor courts.
This follows a successful running of the program in January saving families $28,193 at City facilities.
Following positive feedback from locals and a sharp increase in attendances over January with 7,115 patrons making use of the fee waiver at Karratha, Wickham and Roebourne.
City of Karratha Deputy Mayor Kelly Nunn said the initiative had received strong support from the community.
“We’re excited to extend the casual swim and shoot around fee waiver for families over January for the next three years,” Cr Nunn said.
“The program in January saw a 97 percent increase in attendees at the Wickham Aquatic Centre and 89 percent increase at the Roebourne Aquatic Centre.”
Cr Nunn said extending the program for three more years would continue to ease the financial burden on families.
“We know this is the hottest time of the year and hope families continue to take opportunity to cool off over summer at our facilities,” Cr Nunn said.
