Nominations open for youth advisors

The City of Karratha is on the lookout for engaged and active young people to help shape their community.

The City is calling on young community members who are looking to make a change and have their say nominate for the City of Karratha Youth Advisory Group.

Established in 2019, the group works to ensure young people’s ideas and skills are valued around the Council table, in a partnership focused on increasing consultation with local youth.

City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the Youth Advisory Group is a unique opportunity for members to advocate for young people and engage directly with Councillors and senior City leadership.

“Youth are our future, and we really want to hear from this part of our community,” Cr Scott said.

“The Youth Advisory Group is a partnership between young people and the City of Karratha that demonstrates Council’s ongoing commitment to meeting the needs of all of our residents.

“It creates a platform for the perspectives of young people to be incorporated into Council decisions, and we invite input across a range of City functions including youth development, events, infrastructure and town planning, service design and development.

“I would encourage all young people who have an interest in local government, a passion for their community, and ideas on how we can continue to improve living in the City of Karratha to consider putting their name forward.

Up to 12 young people aged between 11 and 18 will be selected to represent Karratha, Roebourne, Wickham, Dampier and Point Samson alongside three Councillors, Director Community Experience, Manager Community Engagement and Partnerships, and Senior Youth officers.

Acting as ambassadors in the promotion of services for young people throughout the city, the group will continue the work of predecessors to achieve the outcomes of the Youth Strategy 2019-2024.

Further information on the Youth Advisory Group including commitment guidelines and nomination forms are available via the City of Karratha website. Nominations close on Friday 9 February, 2024.
